Mama Mia: An Italian Treat in Penang

By CK Lam - Wednesday, Mar 21, 2012

Nestled in Precinct 10 in Penang is Chez Weng. Despite being several months since its opening in end of 2011, the restaurant is already drawing in the foodies and crowds.

The restaurant is helmed by Chef Weng, with previous working experience in many overseas restaurants before he returned to Penang for his stint in his fine dining restaurant, Cassis.

If you have previously been to Cassis, you would be familiar with his creativeness in designing the dishes. However you won’t find any of them now as he has closed down the place and fully concentrate on this new restaurant.

The food at Chez Weng is different, more on comfort food with ala carte and set menus that are changed regularly using fresh and quality ingredients. The numerous dishes include appetizers, pasta, pizza, ribs and desserts.

Chez Weng Modern Grill Restaurant has been drawing the crowds.

Chef Weng presented the seared tuna coupled with micro herbs, black olive mayo and lemon oil. The sauce enhanced the taste of the tuna which was nicely seared on the outside.

In between courses, we nibble on thin slices of Serrano ham. The cured and air-dried ham is excellent with manchego, thinly sliced pear and watercress with a dash of pepper.

Varieties of pizzas are available, with much detail on the texture and ingredients. Choices include pepperoni and cheese, prosciutto, pear, rocket and parmesan, and also the portabella mushroom, garlic confit and truffle oil as well as a handful of others.

The next course was the seafood squid ink Aglio Olio with thick noodle, done al dente. The ingredients include tender squid, fresh shelled large prawns and chopped parsley. All these ingredients made this dish a special treat.

The Australian rack of lamb was tender and juicy.

We ordered the Australian rack of lamb, served with sides of zucchini, grated potato cake together with rosemary and anchovy jus. The soft golden brown potato cake, with crisp coating contrasted nicely with the tender and juicy meat.

Dessert is definitely on the cards. We finished off with two desserts out of the five stated in the menu. The panna cotta came with fresh berries and chocolate sauce, while the apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and caramel sauce. The thin crispy outer piece of the apple pie adds a delicate crunch.

Daily set lunch at Chez Weng is priced from RM38++ to RM58++ and the set dinner from RM48++ to RM88++.

Chez Weng’s food and its spacious dining area make the restaurant an awesome place for a get together meal with family and friends. Business hours are from 11.30am till 11.00pm and the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
