Dishing out beefy delights in Penang

By CK Lam - Thursday, Feb 16, 2012

If you happen to be in Penang, and crave for some beefy goodness, check out Kang Beef House, which serves hearty beef dishes ranging from the simple beef fried rice to their famed beef soup noodles. Located in the heart of the bustling Jelutong district, between Jalan Jelutong and start of Jalan Perak, this eatery is the place for all things beef.

The signature dishes at Kang Beef House include beef soup noodles, stir-fried dishes with beef and also the beef steamboat. Most diners flock here for their bowl of beef noodles, served in a light yet tasteful broth.

Beef soup noodles

Priced at RM6 (SGD$2.50) to RM15 (SGD $6.20), the dish draws flavor from the assortment of beef parts such as beef slices, brisket, tendons and tripe as well as beef balls. Topped with a drizzle of oil and garnished with coriander, the bowl of noodles is scrumptious and a crowd favorite. For those who prefer their noodles without the innards, the choice is always available.

Besides that, Kang Beef House also cooks up an excellent spread of stir-fried beef dishes. The Dry Fried Hor Fun with beef slices is always a crowd pleasure, with the noodles fried with an intense fire. The beef slices are kept moist and tender with the quick fry, while the Hor Fun is very flavorful.

Another highlight is the stir-fried beef with ginger and onion. The beef is perfectly cooked, juicy and tender, with an addictive balance of spring onions and sharpness of aroma from the ginger. It is warm and comforting with a bowl of white rice.

The beef fried rice proves to be equally good. With a strong flame to heat up the wok, the chef fries the rice along with egg, spring onions and beef slices. The slightly charred aroma is simply perfect, and the beef is tender and succulent. The dish is complemented with a small bowl of beef ball soup.

Moving on to the other selections on the menu, Kang Beef House offers a unique snack in the form of deep fried beef balls, priced at RM4.80 for 6. They are covered with croutons and flour, and subsequently deep fried until golden brown. The crispy bouncy beef balls go well with their homemade chili dip.

Beef steamboat served in a metal pot

Last but not least, Kang Beef House offers a heartwarming beef steamboat, served in a shimmering metal pot with beef broth, radish as well as preserved vegetables. Several ingredients are served at the side, including fresh beef slices, brisket, tripe, tendons and beef balls. It is ideal for sharing among family and friends, especially on a cold rainy day. The steamboat is priced at RM20 (SGD$8.30) per person with a minimum order of two persons.

Even though it has been operating for only a few years, Kang Beef House has been attracting a steady stream of diners. This eatery is a delight to visit for a wholesome meal or just a simple bowl of noodles.
