No Frills Baking Spree

We all love the aroma of freshly baked breads, cakes and pastries. Taking a deep breath, the fragrance makes one think of a fairy tale home, like Hansel & Gretel minus the evil old lady.
Whilst I can wing it in the kitchen when it comes to cooking, baking is an art that’s more precise and unforgiving. The thought of baking brings trepidation. Long forgotten memories of rock buns during Home Economics classes that could be used as construction material flow back to me. I can’t bake to save my life nor for peanuts.
However, on a whim, I decided to try baking cookies at the Bake&Go studio at ToTT Store. I was nervous and suffered from separation anxiety when the supervising staff, Ming, abandoned me to get cookie cutters.
Thankfully the dough was pre-made, all I needed to do was to knead it till the chilled dough had warmed up and softened. Spurning the easier ice-cream scoop option, I went for the cookie cutter option. After the first 5 cookies, I started getting impatient and my cookies started getting thicker. By the 10th, it had become a mindless but therapeutic routine. I was beginning to enjoy the process of rolling the dough into balls and pressing them flat before cutting them into various shapes. Before long, I was done with my dough. As I’d chosen the chocolate flavour, Ming advised me to decorate the cookies with ground peanuts instead of chocolate chips. Decorating the cookies with ground peanuts proved to be a slightly messier and more tedious process but I felt a sense of achievement when I was done. I resolved to try baking more often.
Jasmine Yeo, marketing executive at the ToTT Store, cites the growing popularity of baking. “With the easy-accessible baking materials, from ingredients to machines to recipes, anybody can bake! And it’s so much easier to share your baked treats with families/friends, compare to a cooked meal. And with the recent craze on Masterchef and Junior Masterchef series, many people are inspired.”
Bake&Go is a studio with six workstations, comprising mixing counters and cookie cutting stations next to a wall with six ovens for baking and a cooling station with cooling racks laid out, ready for use. Even participants without a trace of the baking DNA will be able to produce something edible with staff to assist you and pre-made dough. Available on a first-come-first-served basis, all you need to do is to buy a tin of dough at $12.85 (choice of chocolate, strawberry or vanilla) which includes a standard topping (chocolate chips or ground peanuts) or add $1 to $2 to get premium toppings such as macadamia nuts and raisins. So what happens when one’s baking ambitions start to kick in and you envision yourself as the next big baking sensation?
