BreadTalk buying defunct Teochew bakery Thye Moh Chan?

BreadTalk Group could be taking over Thye Moh Chan Cake House, a 68-year-old Teochew bakery which closure on last Sunday was widely reported by the local media.
Last week, BreadTalk’s founder and chairman, George Quek was seen by the members of the public visiting the cake shop at Geylang Lorong 27. According to a source who does not want to be named, an independent film crew was hired by BreadTalk to film the baking process on a separate day, and were accompanied by a representative from the organisation.
The owner of the cake shop, Koh Hong Chua, said: “We are still in discussion, but nothing has been confirmed yet.” Koh also revealed that George Quek had bought some of his baking equipment, but did not say for what purpose.
When speaking to the media last week, Koh revealed that some companies have expressed their interest to buy over the business. At that time, he declined to reveal what the companies are.
Makansutra contacted BreadTalk’s spokesperson Joyce Koh, senior vice-president of Brand Development. She told us that Quek was on a “personal visit.” She added that Quek “has been eating their pastries since he was young, and has an affection for that place.” The BreadTalk rep also denied that there was any ongoing talk to buy over the cake shop.
Besides BreadTalk, Chef Pang Kok Keong of Antoinette and Mrs. Forlino, the wife of Chef Osvaldo Forlino of No Menu, were also seen at the cake shop last week. The purpose of their visit was not known, and they were not contactable before press time.
If the news of the buy out is true, Singaporeans could expect Thye Moh Chan’s pastries, such as the flaky Teochew mooncakes and sesame candies, to be back in the market but probably with a modern and more marketable twist.
So what makes Thye Moh Chan Cake House so unique? Makansutra was there during her final seconds. Look out for our special report!
