By the Penang Sea

On the North West tip of Penang Island lays a small town known as Teluk Bahang. Located further up Batu Feringghi, the coast of Teluk Bahang is a wonderful sight of roaring sea and a stretch of beach that runs infinitely. The village of Teluk Bahang traditionally relied on the fishing industry as its bread and butter, however over the years it has transformed into a tourist haven.
The makeshift and uneven wooden jetties that extend from the shore outwards into the sea exemplify the rustic and tranquility of the area. Plenty of locals flock by to view the beautiful sunset.
Seafood is aplenty at Teluk Bahang, with plenty of fresh catches being offered in the many seafood restaurants. In general, the restaurants here lack the décor and service compared to the various eateries in Batu Feringghi; however they make up with quality and fresh food.
The Fishing Village Restaurant in the heart of Teluk Bahang is one such example, as it serves up a wide range of seafood to complement an assortment of dishes. Their signature dish is one of the delicacies right from the seabed; fresh oysters! This restaurant prepares them in several methods; however the best way to indulge in these oysters is raw with a dash of lemon and Tabasco sauce! The oysters are delicious with their natural briny flavor.
Next are oysters baked with cheese. The initial appearance may not be overly tempting; however its taste really packs a punch. The oysters are simply delicious with creamy cheesy mushroom toppings. Besides that, we also tried steamed oysters with black bean sauce, garlic and chili. This interesting new taste really whets up everyone’s appetite.
In addition to oysters, the restaurant offers stir-fried lala (mussels) and bamboo clams. The mussels are prepared in a relatively thick sauce, with the right amount of tang and sweetness of onions and ginger. On the other hand, the bamboo clams are stir-fried with ginger and spring onion.
The dish that followed is fried crispy squids with black pepper and curry leaves. Fresh squid rings are deep fried, and subsequently stir fried with black pepper sauce. The sticky thick sauce has a slightly charred aroma from the strong heat of the wok.
When indulging in seafood, one important ingredient that is a definite must-try here is the fresh crabs. Being a signature dish here at Fishing Village Restaurant, the crabs are simply best baked. The firm flesh remains juicy with charred aroma.
All these mouth-watering seafood is complemented with serving of fried noodles. Common orders here include the Fried Vermicelli Tomyam, with its light spicy flavor that tickles the taste buds!
Fishing Village Restaurant is a hit with both locals and foreigners alike with its fresh seafood at reasonable prices. There are plenty of convenient parking spaces nearby. Besides that, there are also other attractions around the area including the privately owned Teluk Bahang Butterfly Farm, Teluk Bahang Penang National Park and Tropical Spice Garden.
