Happy Holiday Feasting

By Lorraine Koh - Tuesday, Dec 20, 2011

Everyone will forgive you when you exceed your calorie count during the Christmas season. Besides the presents and Orchard Road light-up, one of the things we look forward to this Christmas is having a good meal with our loved ones. You can go traditional at Quentin’s Restaurant, which serves a hearty, traditional Eurasian Christmas feast, or soak in the sleek city atmosphere at the Boathouse. Or you can just pop by your fave cze char place, after all, it’s the company that matters most during this season.

A traditional Eurasian Christmas Dinner at Quentin’s Restaurant

When I asked my Eurasian friends what they eat for Christmas, most of them replied, “Feng, Devil’s curry and a meat pie made by mom.” Feng includes diced up bits of pork, intestines and liver. It is usually eaten with sliced up baguettes and vegetable pickle (cucumber, carrot, cauliflower and green chillies). For those of us who do not have any Eurasian khakis to share their Christmas meal with, dropping by Quentin’s may be an alternative.

Offering a Christmas lunch and set dinner, throughout the whole of December, pop by Quentin’s Restaurant for some traditional Eurasian cuisine. They serve the obligatory Christmas turkey breast with cranberry sauce, Devil’s Curry, roast beef and Feng. Going at $30++ per person, they require a minimum order of four people per group.

An Italian Christmas Eve at Ristorante Da Valentino

Run by an Italian family, Ristorante Da Valentino is headed by Executive Chef Valentino, and assisted by his mother, Alma, in the kitchen and father, Gianpiero, and brother-in-law, Alberto, at the dining area. Located in Bukit Timah, Chef Valentino will not be introducing any special Christmas menu as he doesn’t want to “fix what people can eat”. Customers can enjoy their regular menu and daily specials. Ristorante Da Valentino will be closed on Christmas Day but will still be open for Christmas Eve.

Some of their signature items include Roast Beef, Pan Fried Veal with Parma Ham in Sage Sauce. They also offer Roast Turkey, if customers are itching to eat the particular fowl.

“Italians from different regions celebrate Christmas differently. As I am from the Northern region, we usually have a Christmas lunch. We start with an appetizer and then eat two types of pasta. But we have a lot of breaks in between, and we will play games with our family members. Our Christmas lunches can span from five to seven hours,” says Chef Valentino.

A quaint and romantic evening at the Boathouse Restaurant

Most will agree that Singapore looks prettier at night. One of the better places to enjoy the city’s night scenery is the Boathouse Restaurant. The 1919 waterboathouse was revamped into a quaint French restaurant with the Fullerton Hotel and Marina Bay Sands in view.

With Modern French as its theme, the Boathouse Restaurant presents a four-course Christmas Eve dinner. Starters include Lobster Royale with Langue De Oursin and Golden Jelly & Oscietra caviar, followed by Roasted Hokkaido scallops with Gillardeau oyster crust, braised baby leeks & fennel emulsion. The main course is Braised Knuckle of Berkshire Pork with Glazed Prunes, Nantes Carrots a la Vichy and Spicy Jus. Priced at $128++ per person
