More to Saveur

By Tris Marlis - Sunday, May 12, 2013

Saveur, the affordable French restaurant, set up by two aspiring chefs – Joshua Khoo and Dylan Ong – has been getting quite a buzz since they started in a small kopitiam in Joo Chiat. They later moved to Purvis Street, expanded their space from one lot to two and just recently opened their second outlet at Far East Plaza. It looks like the fad for their duck confit is showing no signs of fading.

The new dining room which sits about 80 guests will open throughout the day offering lunch, dinner and takeaway for selected dishes. Soon, the restaurant will also start offering tea break menu for the lunch crowd. Despite the higher rent (said to be almost double), the prices of their dishes remain, such as the signature Angel Hair Pasta with Ebi ($4.90) and Foie Gras with Caramelised Onion ($7.90).

Although the menu and price remain similar, the dining room is a huge transformation from the previous look: “We’d like to constantly improve ourselves. Last time we focused a lot on delivering good quality food. This time we also want to deliver a different ambiance to our guests,” says Chef Khoo. Instead of the white clean slate of Purvis Street, they opted for earthy hue of grey and brown this time. The chandeliers also give the restaurant a classy and chic look.

The average wait at Purvis St Saveur can go up to 90 minutes on peak hours during weekend, and with more diners now, we wonder how the duo are maintaining the food consistency. “We are not perfect, but we are trying. Me and my partner are splitting between the outlets and so are our chefs,” says Khoo.
