“Oh my goodness!” exclaimed Yanger Tan, 19 when she saw the sign at NTUC FairPrice Supermarket. And no, it has nothing to do with an earth-shattering deal.

“I saw the sign and thought it was so funny. Females may be offended though,” says Wilson Koh , 34.

“Looking at that sign, what else are we supposed to think? The word itself only means one thing!” says Teo Jia, 21. She adds, “Even if it is a spelling error, I have no idea what is the correct word supposed to be.”

“I think the person who wrote that sign and the person who approve that do not know the meaning of the word. It’s so lewd….gosh!” says, Khaw Leng Kok, 29.

NTUC Fairprice was unavailable for comment at the time of publication, so we are unable to unravel the mystery of what actually happened. Many do agree that it was a case of “coconut” gone wrong. Yanger comments, “I think it is C-nut, which is not exactly an accepted abbreviation for coconut either.”

Mr Koh adds, “It could just be an honest mistake, think it was supposed to be written as young c-nut. Maybe it was an auto-spell correction?”

Whatever the case, the sign caused a lot of snickering, some shock factor, a few puzzled looks, and the usual disgruntled folks pointing fingers at the foreigners who “can’t spell”. Although there is no proof if the error was done by a clueless foreigner or a Singaporean.
